As with most hobbies, you will need to invest a certain amount of time, effort and money in order to get started. Material costs for the visual arts can vary greatly depending on your medium of choice. I've created a list of the basic materials and equipment you'll need to work in the following media:

Painting

For painters, the most expensive one-off investment is the painting easel, which varies in price and quality and the Bob Ross Master Kit .

Ongoing expenses include:

Canvas
Paints
Paper Towels
Pencil and paper
Bob Ross or Tupernoid Odorless Thinner and leakproof container with brush screen
(unless otherwise noted below you will always need these items for my class)
